Conservation Breeding Specialist Group
CBSG, World Conservation Union, 12101 Johnny Cake Ridge Rd, Apple Valley, MN 55124-1851. USA. Email: office "at" cbsg.org
CBSG is part of IUCN - The World Conservation Union. With 975 volunteer members, CBSG is one of the largest of over 110 Specialist Groups comprising the Species Survival Commission (SSC), one of six IUCN Commissions. Support for individual projects comes from conservation organizations, private foundations, zoos, aquariums and regional zoo associations, corporations and wildlife agencies. CBSG has over 10 years of experience in developing, testing and applying scientifically based tools for risk assessment and decision making in the context of in situ and ex situ species management. These tools, based on small population and conservation biology, human demography, and social learning, are used in CBSG's workshop process to produce realistic management recommendations. CBSG's workshop process provides an objective environment, expert knowledge, and neutral facilitation to support the exchange of information across diverse stakeholder groups in order to reach agreement on the important issues facing both humans and wildlife.
There is no Columbidae SSC.
The Conservation Assessment and Management Plan (CAMP) Process
Reduction and fragmentation of wildlife populations and habitats are occurring at a rapid and accelerating rate. The results for an increasing number of taxa are small and isolated populations that are at risk of extinction. For such populations, more intensive management becomes necessary for their survival and recovery. To an ever-increasing extent, this intensive management will include, but not be limited to, habitat management and restoration, intensified information gathering, and possibly captive breeding. The problems for wildlife are so enormous that it is vital to apply the limited resources available for intensive management as efficiently and effectively as possible. CBSG has developed a series of innovative tools, models and workshop processes for risk and status assessment and management/co-ordination of threatened species.
The Population and Habitat Viability Assessment (PHVA) Workshop Process
CBSG's PHVA workshop process builds extensively upon the familiar analytical assessment tool known as population viability analysis, or PVA. The PHVA process uses PVA methodologies as a single component of a much larger interactive, participatory workshop environment explicitly designed to broaden stakeholder involvement and enhance information sharing across disparate scientific and social domains. Through this methodology, the conservation decision-making process is improved with considerably greater local ownership of the recommendation that are developed and presented by the participants themselves.
