Apolinario B. Cariño (affliliation unknown):
Conservation of the Critically Endangered Negros Bleeding Heart Pigeon Gallicolumba keayi on the Island of Negros, Philippines.
In 2005 Apolinario received a conservation award from the Rufford Maurice Laing Foundation for this project, which will provide information on the ecology, breeding, and feeding behaviour of this species in the wild. The information gathered will primarily serve as baseline data that is vital for the formulation of initiatives for its conservation. Secondly, a rescue center for confiscated bleeding heart birds from poachers will be established to ensure the bird’s security. This can help promote the conservation of this species to enhance the public awareness in general. This will eventually generate support from individuals who are interested and willing to help protect this species. Studies and identification of release sites for the rescued bleeding heart birds and declaration of these areas as sanctuary will be imperative to conserve this species on the Island of Negros.
