Data
Data / observations of interest or significance are often 'lost' because they are insufficient to warrant publication. This section provides a platform on which unpublished data and observations can be presented, particularly those arising from scientific research programs.
Sulawesi, Wallacea, Indonesia
Observations made by Jonathan S. Walker at Toraut in the Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park (0º34'N, 123º53'E) in primary lowland rainforest between October 1997 and July 1998.
Maroon-chinned Fruit-dove Ptilinopus subgularis - Near Threatened
All nests found as a result of flushing adult bird(s) from nests. All nest were very flimsy typical pigeon constructions using small twigs.
- Nest located 3 m above ground on a rattan frond; nest contained one white egg (30.12.97).
- Nest found containing one white egg 5 m above ground in a liana 'tangle' (15.01.98).
- Empty nest found 2 m above ground on a dead rattan frond (18.02.98).
- Empty nest found 2 m above ground on a rattan frond (18.02.98).
- Nest containing one white egg on a rattan frond 3 m from ground (22.02.98).
- Nest containing one white egg located on a rattan frond 1.5 m above ground (27.03.98).
- Nest containing one white egg located on a rattan frond 5 m above ground (15.05.98).
- Empty nest located 8 m above ground in sub-canopy tree – two birds flushed from tree (15.05.98).
- Nest (eventually abandoned with no egg produced) located 3.5 m above the ground in a sub-canopy tree (19.05.98).
Six of the nine nests were constructed on top of rattan fronds suggests the importance of rattan as nest sites for this species. At a mean height of 3.5m above ground the dense cover of spines, probably provide protection against predators.
Grey-cheeked Green Pigeon Treron grisecauda
- Unidentified adult bird seen to enter a mature Livistona rotundifolia palm tree and settle, out of sight, on the base of an old, fallen leaf 19m above the ground (02.12.97).
Sulawesi Ground-dove Gallicolumba tristigmata
- Flimsy nest found on forest floor in the open that contained one sand coloured egg (02.03.98). Fifteen days later a squab with darker sand coloured down was observed in the nest.
Green Imperial Pigeon Ducula aenea
- Adult seen collecting twigs then fly to 20 m tall with a very thin (c.2 m) canopy and very dense liana loading. Birds entered the liana ‘tangle’ c.18 above ground (27.06.98).
- Adult seen to leave a dense liana tangle in a tree of very similar characteristics to that above (29.06.98).
Emerald Dove Chalcophaps indica
- Very flimsy nest located on top of Livistona rotundifolia palm leaf of immature plant 2.5m above the ground. The nest contained one cream coloured egg (05.12.98).
- Very flimsy nest containing two eggs located 2 m above ground on L. rotundifolia palm leaf of immature plant – egg size 286 x 216 mm (15.01.98).
Tanimbar Islands, Lesser Sundas, Indonesia
Wallace's fruit-dove Ptilinopus wallacii
- Nest found in July 2006 in forest edge on Yamdena Island 25 km north of Saumlaki city, 6 km west of the sea-shore at an elevation of ~8 m. The well concealed nest was ~4 m high tree in a 5 m tall tree. The number of eggs was unrecorded although local people said that there is always one cream-white egg.
